For once I didn't get rained on, snowed on, hailed on and blown away in my training. It seems like that is how my training has [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] been going the last few weeks. But today, what a gorgeous day! It felt great to be out in nature soaking up the rays on my long run. I am training for an Ironman 70.3 right now. My race is in 6 ½ weeks. I have been training for months now but really knocked up the training to over 12 hours per week starting last week. I want to make sure that I am not over training. I [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] have always been warned that over training can cause injury, fatigue and not helpful in improving endurance and speed for the race.
Are you training for a tri? Have you wondered about what over training looks like? I'll tell you one thing - it doesn't look pretty! This can be over training in any sport. I am particularly talking about running and triathlons though.
There are numerous symptoms of over training. These are in no particular order. One [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is that you get grumpy. One of my coaches told me that when she was training [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] for her [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] first Ironman that she wishes her kids would have been taken [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] away by social services because was so grumpy with them! She so wished someone would have told her that she was over training because she hadn't realized that this was happening to her.
Also, your muscles get very sore and achy. It is one [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] thing to be stiff but you should not be overly sore and achy. Sleep disruption: You either cannot sleep or you are sleeping too much. You start getting colds, flu and feeling run down. When you push your body too much your immune system can't handle it. That is why it is incredibly important to slowly work your way up endurance levels and mileage. This is so you do not injure yourself, your muscles, and your immune system can adapt as well as your cardiovascular system. Another very important point is that you no longer feel like training. You are doing this for yourself. You are doing this for the enjoyment of it. You are doing this for the challenge of it. If you are dreading training what's the point. That's [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] what this is all about!
If you [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] are having any of these symptoms, take a break for a few days. This will be the best thing you can [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] do for your body and your psyche. If you are falling apart by over training you won't be able to reach your goal and do that race. You need to enjoy the training that's what it is all about.
