Tie-Dyed Writing

The other night, my family and I set to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] work on a family project of
tie-dying t-shirts. We laughed and had a grand 'ole time creating
fascinating and cool designs. After each creation, we were thrilled
and talked excitedly about opening our own new business (joking, of
course). But then we washed the shirts. Upon pulling them from the
washing machine, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] we found shirts that were no longer colorful and
full of life. These were shirts that looked as if they had been
washed with blue jeans instead and were accidentally stained
bluish-yellow. Everyone was upset.
Back to the drawing board, we weren't afraid to ask around for tips
on how to make our shirts better. We took all the advice in stride,
thanking each person rather than acting like anyone was trying to
hurt our feelings for not thinking of such simple steps to take to
ensure our shirts would be a great final product. Our second batch of
shirts came our more vivid and the colors stayed ... even after
washing. We felt successful this time and knew that the first time
around was a lesson. We have to make mistakes to learn from them.
Of course, this whole scene made me think about writing. What
doesn't? I pondered the idea of how many writers get defensive when
suggestions are [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] made. No one likes to feel publicly chastised, but
constructive criticism only helps others, not harm them. If writers
would accept the criticism more as someone holding out their hand to
pull them up, they would only further their own craft. Nothing
bothers me more than seeing a writer jump to the defense when someone
has nicely offered help. Sure, it might sting a
little to have someone correct us, but it hurts more to realize
you've made a mistake and no one cared enough to help point it out.
It matters not how good you [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] are at writing, spelling and grammar ...
we are all human and we will make mistakes.
Possibly the criticism a writer hates most is that which comes from
non-writers. Or if one has written an article on parenting and
someone who is NOT a parent comments on what is wrong with the piece.
But that is when we need to pay attention the most. Those who aren't
experienced in any of the areas we write in, or in writing at all,
may be able to pick out our mistakes quicker than anyone simply
because they are reading to read and the mistakes stand out to them.
When a reader lets you know about a mistake, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] accept it with a smile.
Blow up [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] at them for trying to help and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] you've lost a reader. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] In [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] fact,
you'll lose more than [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] one, because they will be sure to tell all of
their friends who will tell all of theirs, and on and on.
More than anything, we as writers should look at our writing like
tie-dying shirts. For one, the end result will never be the same -
never. Two, the process might be fun, but the finale might prove to
be disappointing. Also, no matter how much time we put into it or how
much blood and sweat we've poured into it, there will still be
someone who doesn't like what we've done. Some people just might not
like tie-dyed shirts (political articles), or they might find them
offensive (articles on sex), or they might just be totally
closed-minded and hate color all together (articles on
homosexuality). Finally, no matter how perfect our words are colored
and how
beautifully they weave together (like the colors in tie-dyed shirts),
they might miss their mark altogether. They might seem to fade after
being read and forgotten about. But we can only continue doing what
we love -- creating new works of art and taking all advice in stride
to make the next batch of works even better.
