Airy, calming and thoughtful, Kansas City-based artist Jane Booth's Flint Hills retreat evokes a feeling much like her colorful, free-form paintings. "It's just the most pure, simple, little place," Booth says. tiffany "It's fresh, and it's surrounded by native grasses, and it's totally silent. There are not cell towers; there's no communication—unless you're [there] in person, that is."
The cabin's charm truly is in its simplicity. Engineer Bill Dorset installed solar panels, which furnish the only electricity: The nearest power line is a mile and a half away. The floors are even the original old planks—unwaxed and unfinished.
"We didn't choose the house; we chose the land," Booth explains. "[When] we bought the land on auction, the house had no value. It was an old, old primitive cabin filled with junk. We are just hollister sale nature freaks, my partner and I, and wanted to be outside where the only sound was the wind and the animals." As camping on the land become more onerous, the two began eyeing the small, three-room cabin that they estimate was built in the 1800s.
With the help of a carpenter and artist friend Dave Verschelden, they insulated the walls and added barebones modern amenities. Verschenlden carefully removed the existing wallpaper louboutin with a razorblade, revealing the vibrant blue color that remains through most of the house. Booth only added the soft cream paint to complement the blue. A row of hooks (left, bottom center) serves as a "closet," and several of Booth's paintings are the only décor. The black and white is lancel an earlier piece she made with India ink and collaged black and white photograph pieces. The work over the bed is "Yellow Moon," a new acrylic piece on raw canvas. Booth's work is exhibited by Strecker-Nelson Gallery in Manhattan, Kansas, and Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art in Kansas City.
Since 2004, Booth and her husband have made it out to the cabin at least seasonally, and as the seasons change, she sees the prairie absorb her work. "I kind of paint space," she says. "How that feels and how that tastes and how it looks—in the fall the tall prairie grass changes a million jordan pas cher shades of red, in the spring they're more pastel. I'll stay out there a few days, and the work just begins to shift. It's wonderful to have that permeate myself and then put it on canvass; it's best."
Terrasi immigrated to the U.S. from Italy when she was 9, and the rich heritage of her childhood consumes nearly every part the home. "I've always been drawn to classic and simple elegance," Terrasi says. "I love the relaxed warmth, rich colors and wonderful rustic Italian style. The biggest compliment is when someone walks in our home and asks how old it is, believing that it's definitely been on the lake from the beginning."
In moncler actuality, Terrasi and Miller built the home in 2003 after tearing down an old cottage on the property. With the help of myriad contributors (many of whom are simultaneously friends and vendors) the couple's piece of Italy came together. Parkville-based architect Stephen Cantrell and Kitchens by Kleweno's Randy Sisk created the space and finessed the layout and flow. Designer Jen Bertrand nike air jordan pas cher created tablescapes; floral designer Dan Meiners worked his magic on indoor arrangements; and The Greensman's Kristopher Dabner (who is also Terrasi's neighbor) landscaped and provided greenery for the veranda. Even Franco giuseppe zanotti sneakers Cupini of Cupini's on Westport Road has been known to come over at a moment's notice and whip up a handmade Italian torte.
Terrasi often fights the urge to take home everything from her louboutin pas cher store; as evidenced by her dining room table, chairs, place settings and linens (left, dominant), it's sometimes a losing battle. But she also takes time making her selections. "Having a European background conditioned me to not furnish everything at once; ie. concentrate on quality products that last and take advantage of the natural surroundings," she says. "Europeans … buy to last and not to discard."
KC Magazine Contributing Homes Editor Kim Tucker and her husband, Scott, took a warm and comfortable approach to modern with the Aspen home that lies in the shadow of Red Mountain and Aspen Mountain. "Aspen is a unique place," Kim Tucker says. "It's quaint yet sophisticated, with lots of outdoor activities, walking to wonderful restaurants and great shopping."
The Tuckers most enjoy entertaining friends and family at the home, which they purchased in 2009. Each bedroom has an en suite bathroom, air jordan pas cher allowing for privacy, while the main part of the house has large gathering areas like the spacious kitchen (dominant) abercrombie and main sitting area (right, center). While the Tuckers' main residence in Kansas City is also modern, it is lighter and has more glass. The Aspen house, however, is "very Colorado modern with darker woods and furnishings," Tucker explains.
In the dining room, the doors and windows open to one side for an al fresco dining experience. "The house sits at the base of a footbridge going over the [Roaring Fork] river, so you can sit on the outside decks and watch the river and the occasional bear lumbering down to do whatever bears do," she says.
Cathers Interiors in Basalt, Colorado, designed the interiors in the main house; Tucker herself decorated the guest house (right, bottom) with the help of Kansas City Upholstery, which applied its talents to the space's custom daybed, chair and headboard and to a sofa in the main house's hearth room. The guesthouse bedding is from Scandia Down, and Chris Ferguson of Fixture Designs created the magnificent bedroom chandelier. Genesis Innovations of Loveland, Colorado, installed the yellow air jordan kitchen cabinetry; the chandelier and black and white chest is by Shine Home in California.
"The guest house is a little jewel," Tucker says. "It's colorful, cozy and intimate. We draw straws to see who gets to stay there."
